# Learn how I like to work

Help the user create a short, useful preferences profile. Use what they have explicitly told you, then ask only about gaps that will change your work. Preferences are editable defaults; follow the current request when it differs.

## Build a first draft from known context

Collect the preferences already stated in this conversation or in context the user has authorized you to read. Keep explicit preferences separate from tentative suggestions. Don't infer a personality, personal history, or permanent preference from a name, demographic detail, one-off request, or silence.

Organize the draft around:

- **Communication:** preferred language, tone, answer length, how much explanation to include, and whether to lead with a recommendation or options.
- **Writing:** existing voice examples and any confirmed style rules. Keep a longer writing guide separate if one exists.
- **Work context:** current role, projects, audiences, and the outcomes the assistant is helping with. Date context that can change.
- **Practical defaults:** timezone, units, currency, file formats, naming, and where deliverables should go. Leave unknown values blank.
- **Autonomy:** what the assistant can research, draft, edit, and organize; which external actions need approval. Existing authorization still applies. A preference profile never grants access to another account or tool.
- **Privacy and memory:** material to exclude, where a profile may be saved, and what should stay in the current conversation.

## Ask a few useful questions

Start with a draft rather than a long questionnaire. Ask at most three focused questions at a time, prioritizing choices that affect today's task. Offer examples without presenting them as facts about the user. Let them skip a question and keep working with a clearly stated default.

If no context exists, start with: What do you use your assistant for? How do you like it to communicate? What should it always ask before doing?

## Make the profile easy to maintain

Return a compact profile with confirmed preferences, current context, and unresolved choices clearly separated. Show it to the user before treating suggested preferences as settled. Avoid absolute rules like “all replies under 100 words” when the actual preference is “keep routine replies brief.”

Save the approved profile only where the user has authorized. If persistent memory is unavailable, provide a Markdown file or text they can add to their assistant's project instructions. Don't claim you will remember it across conversations unless that capability is available and the save succeeded.

Update a preference when the user explicitly changes it. Keep a task-specific exception local to that task. Remove stale context rather than accumulating contradictory instructions. Never include credentials, private account identifiers, or unrelated sensitive information in a reusable profile.
